Importance of supporting Muslim Elderly

Why is Support for Muslim Elderly so important?

Social isolation, loneliness and depression are widely recognised as major issues affecting all seniors.  This impacts on the motivation of some seniors to participate and, is further exacerbated for those with limited English language proficiency.  It can also be an acute problem for those who came to the UK later in life.

In addition to loneliness and isolation being identified as the worst aspects of ageing, mobility restrictions, both physical and social (e.g. lack of transport) together with the lack of English proficiency are also interrelated and cumulative factors; this means that for elderly people travel is prohibited which often led them to the loss of social networks, confidence, social skills and motivation.

What will be provided for the elderly?

  • Promote community spirit and create an awareness of the advantages of the collective life.
  • Encourage partnership with all interested parties and empower our elderly at the centre to help organise and provide equal opportunities for all members to enjoy and learn new skills, make new friends, participate in discussion of common interest subjects and share their opinions and views.
  • Provide an opportunity to adjust themselves in a British society according to their culture and Islamic values.
  • Present opportunities to use the technology effectively via the enhancement of computer skills, e-mail and surfing the Internet to make positive use of these inter-active tools in their daily life.
  • Provides social, emotional and practical support for elderly Muslims suffering from ill health, isolation and deprivation and therefore at risk.
  • Liaising closely with Social Services, Council, the Health Authority, the Police, faith groups and community and voluntary organisations to ensure that needs identified by elderly community are met as far as possible.
  • Elderly members will be encouraged to plan their own activities for example health education, arts and crafts and Islamic studies.
  • To participate in a range of stimulating activities including craft classes, reminiscence groups, weekly exercises, shopping trips, visits to the museums and other places of leisure.
