Why is Muslim youth work so important?
Young people from Muslim communities have particular difficulty adjusting and accommodating differing value systems as they make the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Apart from trying to reconcile their Muslim beliefs and ethics in an often challenging and unsupportive environment, many young Muslims face isolation, low self- esteem and deprivation, which can have a long-term impact on their achievement.
Alongside the cultural taboos surrounding many social issues, life for some young Muslims can become unsupportable. This reality is demonstrated by the award-winning charity, Muslim Youth Helpline (www.myh.org.uk), a third of whose enquiries from young Muslims relate to depression, suicide and self-harm.
Moreover, with a political climate in which many young Muslims feel unfairly targeted, it is vital that we invest in supporting the growth and development of new generations of Muslim youth.
How will we operate?
Cambridge Muslims Trust promotes its programme of youth activities online and through its e-mail list. Occasionally, we may write to parents to promote new initiatives.
The vast majority of our activities target 11-21 year olds and almost all are segregated by gender to respect the sensitivities of the communities we serve.
Most of our activities are provided free off charge or at a subsidised rate for members.
We aim to promote the role of Youth Workers in Muslim communities to confront the growing generation gap between elders and young people.
