Cambridge is a wonderful fusion of the everyday and the extraordinary, a living city that has shaped history that today reflects the best of historic and contemporary life and is continuing to make its mark on the future. The Muslim community in Cambridge is probably one of the most diverse, with approximately 70 to 80 nationalities.
Walking along Mill Road, especially on a Friday, epitomises Muslim life. It is quite pleasing to witness the love and harmony that exists amongst the Muslim community, with lots of laughing, hugging, hand shaking and back slapping as they make their way to different shops, restaurants and cafes. You hear a mix of Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish, Urdu, Punjabi, Estuary and American accents; or wasn’t that Spanish? Portuguese? Chinese, Swahili or Ibo? Even the American Muslim servicemen from Lakenheath feel welcome and that is what Cambridge Muslims are all about.
The last census was carried out seven years ago and undoubtedly the Cambridge Muslim population has steadily grown due to:
Natural family growth
Children born and breed in Cambridge who have gone on to marry spouses from other areas
People reverting and converting
Monetary/work related migration from other areas
Immigration
Students study in Cambridge opting to stay on?
Cambridge has a practicing and well balanced Muslim community that is very forward, yet conservative in its thinking. |
